SC2 Map publishing woes

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

I love SC2, I really do, it’s a great game and has some amazing tools to make custom maps. There is just one big thing lacking for custom maps, and that is the way they are sorted by Battle.net. They are sorted only by popularity, meaning people looking for custom games will allways see the most popular maps first, which are usually the maps that are longest around and best known. Newer maps, who haven’t earned a name for themselfs yet will hardly ever get noticed as they will always reside at the bottom of the list, never being able to gain in popularity, no matter how high the quality of the map is.

I found this nice article on Reddit concerning this small oversight by Blizzard, here’s an excerpt with a link to the full article..

The atrocity which is Starcraft II UMS Map publishing needs to be met with disapproval by fans, with the same vigor that RealID was met with.

Blizzard has given us a powerful tool, yet limited us in so many ways due to the current state of UMS Map publishing. The types of maps that people saw in WC3 and Starcraft will be non-existant due to these limitations, and many many quality maps will go unnoticed due to the nature of the current custom game list which is sorted by popularity. Please, make our voices heard, and make Blizzard aware of our displeasure with the current state of custom mapping.

Xenrathe of StarCraft tactics is doing a great job programming the engine and making some very cool custom abilities, here’s a preview of his latest creation, the high-end Summons: Arcturus the Lost..

it also shows a bit of the custom ui that I’m working on for this game.

Talking about custom ui for this game, here’s a quick preview of the next part I’m workin on, the Character dialog..

which is based on the original dialog from Final Fantasy Tactics

As you can see, it’s not completely finished yet, but work on it is progressing good enough for me to say that I should finish it by tomorow evening.

StarCraft Tactics

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Aside from the Monopoly map I’m making for StarCraft 2, I also joined a team that attempts to make a StarCraft version of the old Final Fantasy Tactics game for the Playstation. My job for this project is to make the user interface. I’m planning to keep it as true to the original as possible, but ofc adjusted to fit into the StarCraft sci-fi theme. My first goal is to recreate the battle ui, which is going pretty smooth already. Here’s a quick demo of how it looks in-game.

and a demo of the game-engine made by our project-leader, Xenrathe

I always loved playing Final Fantasy Tactics, so when I saw that someone asking for help on recreating it I jumped at the chance to help him.

The camera’s in this movie are quickly set up for this demonstration, and do not represent the actual game-play camera’s. In other words: Camera’s are still under construction :)
